the guide to the Taranaki
the capital of the region is New Plymouth.. a growing area if u say New Zealand is a growing country but not as much as say Tauranga or Nelson.. but the population is big enough to support a v successful rugby union.. in fact Taranaki held the coveted Ranfurly Shield in 1997, when they beat Auckland at Eden Park.. they defended it against North Harbour before losing it to mighty Waikato.. a short but memorable reign just like the Bay of Plenty's in 2004..
apart from the mountain, the region is known for fantastic surf.. yes one of the best in the country..
here's the Taranaki XV to face the Lions at Yarrow Stadium on Wednesday:
Tony Penn, Andrew Hore, Gordon Slater, John Willis, Paul Tito(captain), Scott Breman, Chris Masoe, Tomasi Soqeta, Craig Fevre, Sam Young, Lifeimi Mafi, Chris Woods, Mark Stewart, Sailosi Tagicakibau, Scott Ireland..
SUBS: Phil Mitchell, Hamish Mitchell, Jason Eaton, Richard Bryant, Mathew Harvey, Brendon Watt, James King
a solid squad if perhaps lacking the class of the Lions..like the Bay of Plenty were.. good players in Andrew Hore, Gordon Slater, Paul Tito, Chris Masoe, Lifeimi Mafi and Sailosi Tagicakibau.. in fact in Mafi and Tagicakibau i think Taranaki have the edge over the Lions.. i don't rate Denis Hickie or Shane Horgan at all.. the official preview actually only gave Hickie a single star.. i think Mafi and Tagicakibau should win the footrace comfortably.. on paper, Andrew Hore has more experience than Andy Titterill having featured for the All Blacks, while Titterill is still battling with Steve Thompson for the England no. 2 jersey.. but Titterill is one of the form hookers for Sale and England and it'll be interesting to see him fight for that coveted Lions no. 2 jersey.. Masoe may be dangerous with his pace..
and finally good old Gordon Slater.. this dog of a prop has won the Ranfurly Shield for Taranaki and knows Taranaki pride better than the Taranaki MPs.. a tremendous privillege for him to play against the Lions in the last years of his career..
